Happily Ever After

I believe in happily ever after. No I’m not the whole rainbows and unicorns type of person, but I do believe in a loving relationship that can stand the test of time. I know it can happen because I’ve seen it in action. My grandparents have been married for over 60 years. They treat each other with respect and love, and they’ve built a loving home and an enormous, successful and happy family. My grandparent’s house is filled with joy, and has always been one of those touchstones in my life that I can go back to when I’m stressed or unhappy. My grandfather and grandmother are true role models for hard work, respect, love and compassion, and I can’t think of two people that I’d rather be like. I don’t always succeed in being that kind of person, but I’m trying.

Part of the reason I wanted to buy the house I have is because it reminds me of my grandparents house, which like mine is over 100 years old. I want to build for myself the kind of life that they created… the life that created me. That’s a legacy I’d like to pass on. I think that’s part of the reason that I get so bent out of shape when people are trespassing, stealing things, dealing drugs in front of my house, having sex in my yard. They’re intruding on the dream I’m trying to build, and it makes me upset that people are bringing such ugliness into something beautiful I want to create. I’m not going to give up on this house, no matter what, because it represents something important to me. I may never have a 60th wedding anniversary, but if I can only achieve some small part of that, it will be enough for me.

I’ve been thinking about my grandparents since I talked to my friend Lisa on the phone last night. I keep asking myself how they would deal with the situation I’m dealing with. Both of my grandparents are strong people, and neither of them are the type of people to roll over and play dead when faced with a confrontation. I can’t help but continue to think that I’m doing the right thing.

Disputes with friends are never dignified

I just got a cell phone call from Pepper ordering me to take down my previous post. I told her I wouldn’t, and she said I’d hear from her lawyer. I said go ahead.

She said, “Aren’t you afraid of libel?” I informed her that the legal definition of libel states that the statement I’m making has to be false. And, of course, what I stated is true, and I can prove it with answering machine message, which is already in numerous digital formats in preparation for posting.

So she said, “one way or another, if you don’t take it down, you’re going to pay.” So I hung up on her. At least I know that I made her as angry as she made me, which makes me feel much better. 🙂

For the record — it’s my site. I say what I want to say, when I want to say it, and I don’t make statements that aren’t true. If that doesn’t sit well with you, there’s nothing I can do. I’m not going to censor myself to please anyone, and if respecting that isn’t important to you, then maybe it’s better that we’re not friends. If you know anything about me, you know that I don’t take orders from anyone. I also don’t respond to threats. I’ve proven time and again that I’m willing to call the police to deal with people who threaten my property or me.

(2014 update: I should just take down this post. But… I wasn’t wrong. Childish and an asshole, but not really wrong.)

Spike, the doggie host

Pepper came over to see Spike last night. Spike was quite the host. First he humped Pepper (I’ve never seen him do that before!) and then he peed on the carpet. Twice. Which makes him almost as good a host as I am. 🙂 I love my dog.

I think I should send Mark Ryden a picture of Spike. With his huge eyes, I think he would fit right into one of his paintings.

Doggie News

Spike went to the vet today. He got his first shot, and he got flea medicine. He also got some gluecose, because he has low blood sugar, which is common for tiny doggies. That’s why they shiver even when it’s not cold. He just has to have glucose three times a day at meals. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to give to him. He’s sleeping now because he’s all worn out from the shot. We have to go back to the vet in three weeks. The vet also told me how to make a little doggie sweater for him, because he’s too small to wear the extra small size.

Labor Day Weekend Update

I had a hugely productive labor day weekend. I constructed my floor-to-ceiling bookcases and unpacked and organized all my books, which has had a profound effect on my psyche. I can read again! I feel so less… constrained. I also feel really rich — I have so many good books I can read, and I don’t have to buy them, because I already own them.
I also finished stripping and sanding the window in my entry way, stained it, and put on the first coat of polyurethane. The second coat goes on tonight. I cleaned the entire downstairs and organized lots of stuff. I did a bit of paint stripping on one of my small bookcases that was painted green. I think I’ll put it away until I finish two other projects, though. Sanding the floor in the living room, and removing the extra water pipes in the kitchen.
Oh, yes, I also put up the section of picket fence in the front to close off the extra entry to my property. This is the entry/walkway that I never use but my neighbors do to cut across the corner of my property when walking between the houses. I think they were a bit pissed off about it, because I was outside and none of them said hi to me all weekend. 😛 That makes me so happy.

weekend update 2002-08-19

It wasn’t the best weekend I’ve ever had. My sister’s going back to England to live, and I had to say goodbye to her Saturday. I’m happy for her that’s she’s going back, because she really likes it there, but I’ll miss her. On Sunday, I went to Kokomo and Peru Indiana to photograph big things, which was cool, but on the way back, my brakes started grinding. So I had to take the car in and spend the afternoon getting new brakes put on, which really sucks, because I was just starting to really get ahead financially after buying the house. Very annoying. But at least I have new brakes. And photos of big things.

weekend update and fan fiction

So, this weekend, I saw Minority Report on Friday with Dan and Doug, then went to the Metro softball diamond to watch the Mutual Friends softball game and hang out with Michelle, Deb, Lisa & the team. Then I went to Dan and Dougs and fell asleep watching Atlantis (very boring Disney movie).
I went to my dads on Saturday, and hung out with my family, then dropped by Sunil’s party. Met Barry’s new friend Alice; she seems nice (Hi Barry!). Talked to Joel and his wife and Jen.
On Sunday, I laid around the house and watered the lawn and basically did nothing but read a book. Although today, the guys are coming to fix the gutters, so I guess that’s progress. I did get some more of the entry window woodwork stripped, too. I think the next big investment project is going to be installing the water hook-up for the washer and dryer. Then I’ll worry about the living room. Because going to the laundry mat sucks. I’m thinking that I might want to have them installed upstairs in the back bedroom. There’s already pipes running up there through the kitchen, so it might not be as hard. Plus, then I wouldn’t have the running up and down the stairs issue. The only problem is that it would take up a lot of room in the back bedroom. I’ll have to think about it more closely.
Now here are some fun online fiction links. I may have posted some of them before, but a couple are brand new.

weekend update 2002-06-18

Over the weekend, I painted the picket fence out in front of my house. I also finished painting first floor on the south side of the house and I put up a small wire garden fence and no parking signs in the backyard around the parking area, to prevent people from driving onto my lawn. I did that because I came home from Lowes Saturday morning and found an SUV parked on my lawn, and a moving truck on the parking area. Of course there was no where for me to park. The guy next door was moving out. Naturally, I flipped out, because, you know, that’s me. I flip out at stuff like that.
But anyway, I have to do some more replanting of grass (for the fourth time) to cover the spots where he drove on the lawn. Like I have time to do that with everything else I need to do. I’m just so tired of people not staying off my property. I don’t want to be a giant bitch, but what the hell else am I supposed to do? I can’t afford to put up a privacy fence yet. Should I just let people drive on my lawn, though? What’s the point of me planting grass if people are going to do this?

Happy Birthday to me

Birthday Alligator
Happy Birthday to me.
Happy Birthday to me.
Happy Birthday, dear me.
Happy Birthday to me.

Hershey Kiss
In case I hadn’t mentioned it, today is my birthday.

Yesterday, I had someone come up to me and say “I recognize you from somewhere.” And after we went through a big list of places (work, college, high school, friends, etc.) it turns out he recognized me from my appearance on the morning news with Dick Wolfsie. I’m like, famous. In Indianapolis, Indiana. I think I’ll stop combing my hair and become disaffected, like all the other celebrities.

(2014 update: I’ve since realized it isn’t that hard to get on the local news, or that impressive. But I should let 2002 me have my moments, shouldn’t I?)
