First Person Account of Sleep Apnea
Just for future reference. My older brother had surgery to deal with his sleep apnea problem.

This time to my truck. I went out this morning and found my gas door open and my gas cap off and hanging. There was no gas missing (I had just filled my tank) and the truck seemed to run fine. (I have a warning light/beep that goes off in the car if I try to drive with the door or cap open, so I couldn’t have done it myself.)
I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet, short of patrolling my backyard with a lead pipe. I’m thinking a new fence is in order; on that goes around the parking area with a motorized gate. Now I have to figure out how to afford that.
UPDATE: I think I’m going to go with a much cheaper, high-tech option… wireless motion detectors that turn on a spotlight and set off a chime inside the house. What’s cool is that you can also get them to set off an alarm, or set off a sprinkler. Heh.
Sheesh. I’m looking at them to get ideas for presents, and people have all this outdated stuff. Plus, if you add your friends as “amazon friends” you can win stuff. It’s cool. Also, let me know if you have a wish list.
I went home to Brighton, Iowa for my family Thanksgiving/Christmas celebration, and Stephanie went with me. We were able to spend a lot of time with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and my brothers; it was very nice. There were 37 people there.
One of the presents my grandmother gave me were CDs filled with family photos — over 3,000 pictures of our family gatherings and events. It’s an amazing record of our family, and I was thrilled. We spent hours going through the pictures and seeing glimpses of our past. I’d say it’s one of the best presents I’ve ever received.
Last night when Stephanie came over to help me set up my Christmas tree, her car was broken into in my backyard. They stole her CD player, a bunch of CDs, a fan and other assorted stuff.
It’s very frustrating; I love where I live, and hate it that I have to call the police as often as I do. This year has been particularly bad. Much worse than any other year I’ve lived here.
Schwinn is once again producing, after 25 years, the Sting-Ray bicycle, with a version for kids, and also one for adults.
My first bike when I was a kid was a red Stingray, very similar to this one, and my older brother’s was blue. I had the V-back handle bars and banana seat. We thought they were really cool until 10-speeds and BMX bikes came out, and then the Sting-Rays were dweeby and uncool.
A year or two ago, I took the two Sting-Rays, along with a bunch of other old bikes from my mom’s garage, to the Bicycle Action Project [link deprecated: no longer in business] in downtown, Indianapolis, which is a no-for-profit group that helps kids repair bikes they can then keep. When we wheeled the Sting-Rays in the building, the kids were nuts about the banana seats, and everybody wanted to use those on their bikes.
Pretty funny how everything comes around again.
I’m being interviewed by a reporter from Nuvo tonight about my “Big Things” Photo Galleries, so in honor of the occasion, I’ve added tons of photos to the galleries. I’d been behind in adding things for awhile, even though I’ve been taking photos constantly over the last year. Now all my new pics are added, with the exception of some photos that my friend Eric took for me in Minnesota. I have to research exactly where they’re located before I throw them into the mix.
There are a handful of new photos in the Indianapolis section, some of them updates of things I already had and some are new inflatables I spotted. There are a lot of new photos in the “Indiana and Beyond” section, because I took a few day trips and also added things I photographed on the way to my grandmother’s house last year.
I have a brand new tracking system at home now, too, with an Indiana map on my office wall with all the new big things marked that I need to locate.
On Saturday, Stephanie and I drove to Cincinnati early in the morning for a figure skating competition that Stephanie was competing in. She won a fourth, third and first place medal in her three competitions. I got to meet several members of her former synchro skating team and other friends of hers, which was really cool. She knows some really nice people. On Saturday afternoon, we spend time recovering from the trip (she was worn out, and I’ve been fighting a cold).
On Sunday, we did some work around her house, including cleaning out her garage, hanging all her gardening tools in the garage, weeding, and replacing outdoor lights. We also checked and worked on all her storm windows. We’re pretty close to being done with seasonal work at both our houses. At hers, we need to rake and mow, and put her planting pots away. At my house I have to put away the hose, rake & mow, put stuff in the basement, and do some more insulation work.
An article by Thomas Benton on his private library. I think it’s safe to say that he and I should never be in the same room together, because we’d be a bad influence on one another. He has the whole Library of America. I’m so jealous.
I had a really amazing weekend with my girlfriend in Virginia this weekend. I would have blogged about it earlier, but I spend a big chunk of time today getting the trip photos ready and unpacking my stuff. We had so much fun with the other beetle owners and sight-seeing, and the drive to Virginia was really incredible too, because the fall foliage was just beautiful. It was a picture-perfect weekend, and I couldn’t be luckier than to spend it with such a great girlfriend.
