I kid you not this is the real news story: "FARMINGTON — While the state has yet to officially cancel any events involving horses that might have been exposed to a local recent equine herpes outbreak, owners and arenas are taking precautions. Because of the outbreak, contestants at the Davis County Sheriff's Mounted Posse Junior Queen Contest had to cowgirl up Thursday night without their mares. Instead of competing on horses, as is typically the case, contestants were asked to trot around the arena with stick horses as their show ponies." Hysterical! There's video, too.

Long and interesting article examining the New York Times editorial policies, and their role in reporting on women's suffrage as a lesson in how a newspaper can act on and react towards major social movements. — "The New York Times addresses current issues in three ways: as expressions of guidance on the editorial page, as expressions of individual opinion on the op-ed page, and as worthy (or not) of news coverage or analysis in the rest of the paper."

Pretty much how I'm attempting to do it, minus the time to actually carry out any of these steps. Also, I'm not using Tumblr, I'm using Drupal, which adds about 897 steps to the process. So that's good, I guess.

There's no such thing as "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" – poverty begets poverty and no amount of hard work will guarantee that you break the cycle. Marriage isn't solution

During the House's debate, Rep. Pete DeGraaf, a Mulvane Republican who supports the bill, told her: "We do need to plan ahead, don't we, in life?" Bollier asked him, "And so women need to plan ahead for issues that they have no control over with a pregnancy?" DeGraaf drew groans of protest from some House members when he responded, "I have spare tire on my car. I also have life insurance," he added. "I have a lot of things that I plan ahead for."
Yes, because Rape insurance is just like having life insurance: You're definitely going to die some day, and DeGraaf thinks you're definitely going to get raped. Don't come crying to him if you didn't prepare to be the victim of a horrific crime!

The bedtime book you don't dare read to your kids — "There’s a reason that the No. 1 title on Amazon last week was a still-unpublished rhyming picture book called Go the Fuck to Sleep—a Facebook gag turned PDF samizdat turned publishing sensation. Or there are two reasons, interrelated. The straightforward, surface one is that it’s accurate: “I know you’re not thirsty. That’s bullshit. Stop lying. / Lie the fuck down, my darling, and sleep.”

Last fall, Kanye West, a zealous user of Twitter, coined the phrase “hashtag rap” to describe analogies in rap lyrics that use a comic pause where the words “like” or “as” might be expected. West explained that this style conveys the rhythm of the pound-sign in online hashtags. Consider lines from the rapper Drake like, “Two thumbs up [PAUSE] Ebert and Roeper” and “I could teach you how to speak my language [PAUSE] Rosetta Stone.” Hashtags have become a big part of the rhythm of online communication — on the social networks, but even in e-mail and texts. Leave it to West and Drake to formalize them as prosody.

Alice Austen was one of the first American women to become a photographer, and the style she developed anticipated the genre of documentary photography. She lived the life of an independent, genteel woman during the Victorian Age, but she also defied convention and challenged stereotypes in both her work and in her personal life. Although Alice Austen was certainly not the first lesbian photographer, she was the first who is known to have photographed lesbians who could be recognized as lesbians. Using the camera's power of authenticity, Austen photographed her friends in a way that seems remarkably overt for 1900.

Please, friends, don't worry about me. While I was a bit startled to be thrown aside for someone who flunked out of nun school, I assure you that I will be fine, and my main pursuits in life shall continue to be martinis, bon mots, and looking fabulous. You'll also be glad to know I have retained custody of the Captain's hard-drinking gay friend, Max. Anyone who gets tired of sing-a-longs should feel free to look us up.
