Lost U.S. city found as lake dries up

Lost U.S. city found as lake dries up” All I can say is… cool.

There’s apparently an old town under Geist Reservoir here in Indianapolis, too. On one of the online map companies, if you search for Geist, they still have a label for Germantown appearing in the center of the lake. I’ll endeavor to find the link to it.

Living downtown is cool, hip and trendy

Hey here’s an article on something I figured out back in 1992: Living downtown is cool, hip and trendy. “The death and life of America’s cities” – Fred Siegel, The Public Interest

But do you own a cool Victorian there? I thought not.

(2014 update: Yes, in 2002 I was obliviously quoting an article from a neoconservative think tank without looking closely at what they were saying. I’m sorry; I was an idiot. I probably still am. It’s an interesting read today, though, because you can definitely observe how wrong they were in the article “It would be a mistake to assume that the big cities can ever again achieve the dominant position they once held.”- much has changed in the 12 years since they wrote it; the flood of people moving back to urban centers and away from suburbs is well-documented.)

Go vote in this Channel 6 News survey right now. Of course, you should vote in favor of same-sex unions.
The Indiana Civil Liberties Union is suing the state of Indiana for not recognizing the Vermont same-sex unions of three couples in Indiana. Read an excellent analysis of the suits here. Its much better than the local coverage in the Indy Star. I know one of the couples suing the state, David Wene and David Squire, from their volunteer work for Indianapolis’ Gay Library and for Jesus MCC.

Left-Handed People and the Catholic Church

Did you know that “Centuries ago, the Catholic Church declared left-handed people to be servants of the Devil? For generations, left-handers who attended Catholic schools were forced to become right-handed. They justified this belief on the basis of several bible quotations that stigmatized left-handedness.

There are also quite a few superstitions about being left-handed. It wasn’t until we realized, in the last century or so, that there are legitimate biological reasons for left-handedness, that people were no longer forced to use their right hand. I’m not the only person who sees the parallels between being left-handed and being gay. You can read a lot more about left-handedness at this site.

Letter to America

Wow, this letter to America is an eye-opener. To the rest of America, that is– they seem to be freaking out about this letter all over the net. I, on the other hand, have been saying some of the same things, in nicer ways, for a long time. America does need to wake up and realize that the world hates us. Most of their reasons for hating us are unjustified or unfair, but some of them aren’t. And we need to have enough of a conscience as a nation to recognize the difference. Also, we need to kick that Dumbass Bush out of office.

Wil Wheaton

An article on celebrity weblogs, including one of my favorites, Wil Wheaton’s. Wil, at least, is a regular guy, unlike most of these other celebrities, who are pretty damned clueless and seem to use their weblogs as promotions of whatever crap they’re working on. If I’m not interesting in watching Entertainment Tonight’s blanket coverage of your star-studded premiere for your piece of crap movie, why on earth would I want to read about it on your website?

cockeyed.com

I’ve posted this link before, but I’m doing it again, because Rob has posted more stuff: Cockeyed.com. Rob likes to test things and do amateur scientific experiments, like How much is in a can of EZ Cheese? His latest is How Much is in a Million Dollars. I like that one. He also plays pranks on people. My favorite prank is the giant banana sign he hung outside a mall. There seemed to be a piece of art missing from the mall, so he made his own replacement, and put it up.
But a close second is the prank he played on Google. They were sending a guy (chad) riding his bike across country, and you were supposed to send in a photo of Chad if you happened to see him in your area. Well Rob decided to take a bunch of fake photos of himself dressed up as Chad the Biker, and have all his friends all over the country send them in. Pretty fun. Also, he makes cool craft type art experiments, Like this paparazzi costume. In all, I think Rob is really cool. He seems to like life, and have funny friends. That’s the kind of guy we all want to know.
