“Execution of homosexuals”

Nobody seems to believe me when I say that’s on the agenda of at least some religious right… but this is the second time I’ve seen it in print lately… this time in a Salon article about millionaire Howard Ahmanson Jr., a religious fanatic who has funded every major right wing cause from the recall election in California, to the schism in the Episcopal church to Bush’s 2000 presidential campaign.
Right there on the second page of the article:

“It was then that he found his salvation in the church and in R.J. Rushdoony, a prolific author and an influential theologian of the far right. Rushdoony is the father of Christian Reconstructionism, a strange variant of Calvinism that stresses waging political struggle to put the earth, and in particular the U.S., under the control of biblical law. In his 30-some books, he advocated everything from the end of government-administered social welfare and public schools to the execution of homosexuals. For around 20 years, until Rushdoony’s death in 1995, Ahmanson served on the board of his think tank, Chalcedon, granting it a total of $1 million. In exchange, Rushdoony acted as Ahmanson’s spiritual advisor, imbuing him with a sense of order and a mission.”

MIAMI — U.S. Immigration officers began fingerprinting and photographing tens of thousands of visitors arriving from certain other countries Monday, in what federal authorities described as a sophisticated new security measure to monitor who enters the country and how long they stay.
Citizens of 27 countries, including Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and most European nations, are exempt from the program if they are visiting as tourists for fewer than 90 days.

Wow, is this extreme. We can’t do better on the intelligence end, to prevent this from being necessary?

FBI urges police to watch for people carrying almanacs

Farmer's Almanac 2004
Farmer’s Almanac 2004

WASHINGTON – The FBI is warning police nationwide to be alert for people carrying farmers almanacs, cautioning that the popular reference books covering everything from abbreviations to weather trends could be used for terrorist planning.

In a bulletin sent Christmas Eve to about 18,000 police organizations, the FBI said terrorists may use almanacs “to assist with target selection and pre-operational planning.”

It urged officers to watch during searches, traffic stops and other investigations for anyone carrying almanacs, especially if the books are annotated in suspicious ways.

“The practice of researching potential targets is consistent with known methods of al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations that seek to maximize the likelihood of operational success through careful planning,” the FBI wrote.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the bulletin this week and verified its authenticity.

Now if if the guy carrying an almanac is driving a John Deere and wearing a seed corn hat, that’s probably not a terrorist. That’s probably my Grandpa.

Pope speaks out against equal marriage rights for gay people

On Sunday, Pope John Paul spoke out against equal marriage rights for gay and lesbian people.

“In our times, a misunderstood sense of rights has sometimes disturbed the nature of the family institution and conjugal bond itself,” John Paul said.

Let me repeat: never setting foot in a Catholic church again.

Gay Gatherings Removed from Video Footage at Lincoln Memorial

According to 365 Gay News:

(Washington, D.C.) All images of gay gatherings at national sites, including the Millennium March on the Washington Mall have been ordered removed from videotapes that have been shown at the Lincoln Memorial since 1995 according to a civil service group.

Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) says that the directive came from National Parks Service Deputy Director Donald Murphy. Murphy is said to have been concerned about pictures in the video that showed same-sex couples kissing and holding hands after conservative groups complained.

The Millennium March held in 2000 to bring attention to LGBT civil rights issues drew tens of thousands of gays and their supporters to the mall for one of the biggest demonstrations since the civil rights and anti-war marches of the 1960s.

In their place, the Park Service is inserting scenes of the Christian group Promise Keepers and pro-Gulf War demonstrators though these events did not take place at the Memorial in what Murphy calls a “more balanced” version.

I happened to attend the GLBT Marches in Washington in 1987, 1993, and 2000. I’ll be looking into this issue some more.

UPDATE: According to this article, the footage of gay and lesbian gatherings will not be removed, but the historically inaccurate footage of anti-gay christian groups may still be added. Apparently the pressure to do this editing is coming from conservative Kansas Republican congressman Todd Tiahrt
