The Tom Delay Corruption Scandal

Salon Magazine writes a very readable, informative article on how wide-spread the corruption scandal really is.
It’s pretty amazing to read, because you start to understand how many GOPers and how much money is involved, and how much campaign finance laws have been flattened by the government machine; enough that had it not been for the corruption and illegality, the Republican’s wouldn’t have taken control of the Congress. Truly scary.

Not only did Tom Delay get indicted for criminal conspiracy and had to step down as Majority Leader, but Bill Frist is officially under investigation by the SEC for insider trading.
And you’ll feel something akin to the electric thrill I once enjoyed when Gilmore, Pat Conway, The Great Creatore, W.C. Handy and John Philip Sousa all came to town on the very same historic day!

You conserve gas so the president doesn’t have to

A current Associated Press story:
“WASHINGTON (Sept. 26) – President George W. Bush urged Americans to cut back on unnecessary travel to make up for fuel shortages caused by Hurricane Rita as he prepared to take his seventh trip to the Gulf Coast.”
Then a few paragraphs later:
“The president returned Sunday from a three-day trip in which he stopped in four cities that have been a base for government response to the storm. As he has in most of his previous trips to the areas hit by the hurricanes, Bush spent most of the time in meetings with state and local officials – many of them reporting by videoconference.”
The second point being, of course, that he could have stayed home and had videoconference meetings at the White House, but then he wouldn’t look like he was doing something. I think the AP is a bit P.O.’ed at the president.

More prisoner abuse by the U.S. military

Time Magazine reports: The U.S. Army has launched a criminal investigation into new allegations of serious prisoner abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan made by a decorated former Captain in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, an Army spokesman has confirmed to TIME.
Meanwhile, Americablog is bringing to light a story about U. S. soldiers trading digital pictures of dead Iraqis and Afghans for online access to porn. The pictures are then posted on the same porn site. It’s pretty grim; there are pictures of soldiers gleefully posing in front of humiliating pictures of dead middle easterners. So if you click through to the link, be prepared to see some sickening stuff.

Senate leader Bill Frist is in some trouble regarding stock sales. He and other insiders apparently sold off stock in a company that he partially owns, just before the stock price went down, ala Martha Stewart.
The Associated Press has the basic story.
And ABC News exposes Frist’s lies that he didn’t know anything about the state of the stock before he sold.
Wow, I wonder what Stephanie’s classmate Nick Smith, who works for Senator Frist, thinks. Hee.
