Indianapolis Star News Coverage

So I’m persuing the Indy Star website, because I just can’t bring myself to actually subscribe to the paper, and I ran across this little gem of an article. It’s about coffee mugs. The author of the article is comparison shopping coffee mugs. Indianapolis is an urban city of over a million people. We have a larger population than San Francisco. Check out their paper sometime. The Indy Star is lame. Lame, lame lame. Shut up about the mugs, dude. Just shut up. Jesus.

More proof of the dangers of the Patriot Act

The FBI seized and opened, without warrant or legal right, a package being exchange between two reporters containing unclassified information about terrorism. The exciting thing about it is that the government’s illegal seizure occurred right here in Indianapolis at the FedEx hub, and the jackass FBI guy who made the bonehead decision to snatch the package was our own local guy, Doug Garrison. Sure, our government isn’t out of control. And sure, we aren’t a bunch of rubes out here in Indy.

Weekend Update 2003-03-03

So this weekend I spent Saturday stripping wallpaper off the walls in the living room, and doing some cleaning in the living room and throughout the house. I finished two walls, have two to go. I felt kind of funny/ill all day, dunno why.
Saturday night Kathy and I went out to the final evening of Utopia, which is now closed. Kim Archer was singing, and Jess Curtis, and others. It was an interesting evening, but I have to say, I didn’t really feel all that sad about the closing. It was a decent club, but I’ve kind of moved on in a lot of ways from going out all the time. And I have to say it was never as much fun as going to the Ten. The crowd at the Ten is just more fun and accessible and doesn’t seem to be made up of people who would blow you off if you spoke to them. The crowd at Talbott Street seems pretty snotty too, come to think of it. Interesting — Talbott Street used to have a website up, but when I searched for it to link to, it’s no longer there. Hmmmm.
Sunday I went shopping for stuff to help organize my house. Then later Kathy came over and we put up two sections of drywall. Then we accidentally bumped the good hammer, and it fell through the hole in the floor down into the crawl space. So Kathy figured out how to fish it out of the hole while I took a break to relax and ummm… de-stress. Then we showered, and she gave me a backrub, and when I fell asleep, she did her laundry and also washed all my dishes, so when I came downstairs, all my dishes were done. Isn’t that the coolest thing? She’s pretty thoughtful.

Put a Target Downtown!!

Do me a huge favor — e-mail Target and tell them to put a Target store at 16th and Central in Downtown Indianapolis. I’ll tell you exactly how to do it:
Go to this page of the website, and click on the link “For questions about our stores, productsand services, click here.”
You’ll see a form to fill out, and one of the options on the drop-down menu in the middle of the form is “I want a target in my neighborhood.” Fill it out and tell them to put a store in Downtown Indianapolis. Tell them it’s a great location for one because it’s right in the middle of massive historic restoration, with lots of young urban professionals who already shop at outlying Target stores, but would do so even more if there were a convenient store nearby. Tell them this would not only be a highly profitable store, but would also improve the neighborhoods that are already undergoing a cultural renaissance.
You can also call their number: “If you would prefer to speak with a Guest Services Representative about Target retail locations, merchandise or service, please call 1-800-440-0680.”

Lost U.S. city found as lake dries up

Lost U.S. city found as lake dries up” All I can say is… cool.

There’s apparently an old town under Geist Reservoir here in Indianapolis, too. On one of the online map companies, if you search for Geist, they still have a label for Germantown appearing in the center of the lake. I’ll endeavor to find the link to it.

Living downtown is cool, hip and trendy

Hey here’s an article on something I figured out back in 1992: Living downtown is cool, hip and trendy. “The death and life of America’s cities” – Fred Siegel, The Public Interest

But do you own a cool Victorian there? I thought not.

(2014 update: Yes, in 2002 I was obliviously quoting an article from a neoconservative think tank without looking closely at what they were saying. I’m sorry; I was an idiot. I probably still am. It’s an interesting read today, though, because you can definitely observe how wrong they were in the article “It would be a mistake to assume that the big cities can ever again achieve the dominant position they once held.”- much has changed in the 12 years since they wrote it; the flood of people moving back to urban centers and away from suburbs is well-documented.)
