The Brawny Man

Nuvo has an article on the Brawny Man website, where the paper-towel icon stars in some short movies that are basically cheesy romance novels come to life. I saw one of them broadcast as a commercial during daytime TV the other day, so they’ll probably be making their way to prime time eventually. As NUVO suggests, they make great group viewing where you can make fun with others.

TV Shows on DVD

My friend Doug loaned me the DVDs for several TV shows to watch while I’m home recuperating from heart surgery. So my girlfriend and I watched the first season of “Mad About You” over the last couple weeks. I always liked the sitcom about a happy New York couple, Paul and Jamie Buchmann (played by Paul Rieser and Helen Hunt), and it was very fun to watch now that I have a partner, because when it originally aired I was single. It’s fun to snuggle on the couch and watch a TV show about being a couple with my other half.

Veronica Mars

Just finished watching the season finale of Veronica Mars — and I have to admit I didn’t piece the whole thing together before the end, although all the elements were there and I should have figured it out. I did predict that Aaron Echolls was the one who had the cameras in the boat house, but I didn’t manage to put that together with Lilly. I’m bothered that they didn’t wrap up what happened with Weevil and Logan’s confrontation. And I predict that it’s Wallace that showed up at her door at the end.
I love the way they treat story arcs in this show — they write them in the same way Joss Whedon did in Buffy. They have stories arcs that last for a single episode, stories that span several episodes, and stories that stretch over the entire season, all of which mesh together well with the shorter arcs advancing the larger ones. It’s a formula that two of my other favorite shows, Lost and Desperate Housewives also use, and when the writing is good it keeps me riveted to the show. I wish more shows were written this way.

‘Doctor Who’ via wikipedia

Wikipedia article on Dr. Who. I understood very little about the program, other than I caught a few episodes on cable when I was a kid in the 1980s, and had a crush on Sarah Jane Smith. An article like this would have been very helpful when I was young. It has since become one of my favorite programs.

Also: Doctor Who Scarf, for those of you who particularly like the fourth doctor, Tom Baker. That’s the program I was watching as a kid.

Oh Zephyr winds that blow on high, lift me now so I may fly

Really I had no reason to blog that, but I thought of it just now. So when’s that show coming out on DVD, anyway?
Update: A quick search tells me that the ownership of the show is changing, and it may someday soon be offered on DVD. Currently the companion show, Shazam, is running on TV Land. Hmm.

This is what people are freaking out about?

Here’s the online clip (courtesy of ifilm) of the Desperate Housewives promo of Monday Night Football.
it’s silly at worst and just plain tame at best. What the hell is up with people that this is what they’re protesting? What are people smoking these days, anyway?
I’m sorry, but it’s a handful of religious nutjobs who suddenly think they have a voice and some kind of power who are squealing about these things, and the media is stupid enough to give them a voice. That’s just incredibly dumb.

HoYay

One of my favorite things about the really stellar website Television Without Pity is that most shows have a HoYay forum.

It’s fun reading what the recappers thought of my favorite shows, but it’s even more fun reading what other gay people think of my favorite shows.

Especially when people in the forums link to pictures like this.
I’m not even a gay boy and that picture made me say “damn!”

So far this year, “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives” have been standout hits on my list of new shows. Both have interesting/different concepts, excellent character development, and unpredictable story lines that are keeping me interested.
“Veronica Mars” is a bit odd and not perfectly developed, but it’s interesting enough that I’ll probably keep watching. The story lines are somewhat unbelievable, and there’s too much exposition. I feel like I’m supposed to be invested in some characters where I don’t have enough to go on to be on their side. But the concept is different, and the main character is cute.
“Jack and Bobby” is a huge disappointment. I thought it was an interesting concept; what childhood experiences shape a person who goes on to become a great leader? But it’s execution is seriously flawed. The character of the single mother/college professor who’s son will go on to be president is completely over the top and not believable at all, and I really dislike the tone of the politics, too. Sadly, I don’t think this will stay on my schedule.
“Survivor: Vanuatu” isn’t really grabbing me, either. I was definitely put off by the sexist opening premise where men were given special treatment in some sort of native ceremony, and I think the “guys vs. girls” was bothersome the first time they did it. It seems very predictable, at this point, and aside from Scout, there’s no one there that I’m really rooting for.
As far as returning shows, “Gilmore Girls” has been snappy and well-done, and I LOVE the Lorelei/Luke relationship that I’ve been rooting for since season one. This has always been one of my favorites, and it looks like it will stay that way.
“Joan of Arcadia” is wonderful, as always. Viva la Joan.
“CSI: Wherever” The return of the original Vegas version is great. NY – not so much. Dunno why, exactly, but it seems very copy-cat and formulaic. I HATED that one of the story lines of the show was about the rats in New York and how many of them there are and blah blah blah blah blah. Geez, I don’t need that much local color, folks. I know a lot about New York already.
“Joey” Hmmm. It’s not totally stupid. I like Drea Matteo. I’ll watch.

Weekend Update 2004-09-27

Stephanie and I did a ton of work at my house this weekend to get the place ready for the party I’m throwing this coming Saturday. Mainly we did a lot of cleaning and organizing.
The party will be a retro 80’s party… and in gathering up stuff to wear, we’ve seen tons of appropriate stuff in the stores. Target has leg warmers and fishnet stockings. Pac-Sun and Hot Topic have checkered vans, t-shirts and the big oversized belts from the 80’s. Hot Topic has buttons of 80’s bands. Izods and Polo shirts are back at Lazarus.
This is a great site for ideas about the 80’s… InThe80s.com. I pulled a lot of ideas about decor from here, and there’s lots of helpful stuff about clothes, too.
We finally got to see the finale of The Amazing Race this weekend — that made me very happy, because I had been cheering for Chip and Kim for quite awhile, mainly because they treated each other very well and worked together throughout the whole race, and they did, for the most part, play fair with everyone all the way along.
