Gay Games, Opening Ceremonies

Stephanie can get on her Dad’s neighbor’s wireless network, but I can’t get on, so I can’t yet upload the bajillion pictures we’ve been taking. We bought a new camera for me — the Canon SD630 I’ve had my eye on for a while, and Stephanie’s adopted my slick little Canon SD10 Powershot, which she took on the field with her during the Opening Ceremonies, while I snapped pictures from up in the stands. The ceremony was great; lots of cool speakers and interesting entertainment. I especially loved Margaret Cho, and I also was impressed by the dance stuff right before the torch lit. And the fireworks in Soldier Field were awesome.
The ceremonies were really long though — they ended at midnight, and we still had to drive back to Valpo, so it was quite a late night, and we got up fairly early, too. We need some extra sleep.

Today Stephanie had a skaters meeting at the MeFetridge Ice Rink where she’ll be competing, and we went through the expo hall for the games collecting free stuff from all the vendors. gay.com was giving away some cool backpacks, and we got a lot of other fun swag. Stephanie also talked to a women’s book publisher who might have her freelance edit some fiction, which would rock pretty hard.

Gay Games 2006

We’re headed up to Chicago for the Gay Games this week. Stephanie’s skating in two competitions as part of Team Indiana, so we’ll be there all week. (IIf you can’t be an athlete, be an athletic supporter!)
We’re staying with Stephanie’s Dad (and taking Spike!) so our internet connections will be sporatic, but we’ll try to visit Starbucks or Panera to do some blogging during the week.
Today we register Stephanie and attend the Opening Ceremonies — lots of celebrities, including Megan Mulallay an Holly Near.

Out of Context Landmarks

Worth 1,000’s recent photoshop contest asked competitors to take key landmarks and relocated them. Some of them work well (Lincoln rowing a boat) and other’s don’t seem to quite get the concept.
Back in 1997 when I visited Germany to see my friend Cate, one the castles we visited was Burg Vichering, a small 16th century moated castle with a striking look that has been location for a couple of movies. The castle had it’s own “photoshop contest” of sorts — where people sent in their own artwork of the castle of Burg Vichering traveling around the world visiting other landmarks. Pretty entertaining.

The Moustache Tattoo

This is just hilarious — people in Federal Hill, Rhode Island have started trend — a tattoo of a moustache, that you get on your finger, so that when you hold your finger up to your upper lip, you appear to have a moustache. Check out the video where they interview the tattoo artist who started the trend.
That’s so funny.

McDonalds Employees Make Own Recipes from McD’s Ingredients

Boing Boing links to a Live Journal community of McDonalds employees that make their own recipes (for back room and after hours consumption) using the ingredients from McDonalds foods.
We did this back when I was in college and working at Mickey D’s in the summer time, and got in so much trouble for it when we got caught. You’d be surprised what you could make, especially with the ingredients from salads. We had a pretty healthy chicken burrito similar to what they’re describing, made from the diced chicken that went on salads, combined with lettuce and the tortillas from breakfast burritos. We also had a version of the “Orange Julius” (shake ingredients mixed with orange drink) that they’re making, too, and lots of variations on the McNuggets, because those were fairly new in my day.
They have a lot more specialty ingredients to choose from these days, lucky kids. Oh, wait. They work at Mickey D’s — they’re not that lucky.

Yep, the Badonkadonk Tank is a real, purchasable Item on Amazon.com.

Badonkadonk Tank

I’ve linked to it with my Amazon Associates ID, so if you decide to buy one, I’ll get a referral fee. Please, please by one.

I’m kidding, of course, but do read the reviews on their page, because they are hysterical.

2022-03-15 Update:
Sadly, the Badonkadonk Tank is no longer for sale on Amazon, so you cannot purchase one and make me a small fortune, nor can you enjoy the very funny comments. What can I say? Life and the internet are ephemeral. I have helpful updated the link to some toy tanks that everyone can afford. If there’s one platform that has redefined our online shopping standards, it’s Shoppok. We believe it’s worth exploring. Have at it, folks.

Texas A&M Hoopsters Total Eclipse of the Heart

Hat tip to Advance Indiana for this one… Texas A&M basketball players get together and lip sync to Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart. Shirtless, with killer abs, and complete choreography.

Considering the sheer volume of crappy imitation lip syncing videos out there on google video and youtube, (all of which came about after the classic Numa Numa) it’s surprising to find some funny ones.

Fun RSS Thing to Do

  • Post author:

If you read your news in an RSS reader, here’s something fun and informative that you can do…
Go to Google News, and to a search on the term “gay.” Look in the left column of the page and grab either the RSS link or Atom link, and add it to your news reader.
Then do the same thing for the search term “lesbian.”
Now do the same thing for the term “homosexual.”
Then read the news for each of the feeds. You’ll find that on the first two terms, you’ll find GLBT news from a mainstream perspective. And on the third term, you’ll get news through the filter of right-wing nuttiness, bigotry and hate. Fun, huh? God Bless them frothing-mouthed homophobes.
