Lilly Opposes SJR-7

As reported in the Indy Star (and by bilerico.com, Advance Indiana and Taking Down Words):
Eli Lilly has joined several other large Indiana corporations (Cummins, Wellpoint, Dow AgroSciences) in opposing SJR-7, the Marriage Discrimination Amendment:

“As a result of this uncertainty (over what the amendment’s impact might be,)” Murphy wrote, “some employees may choose to leave Indiana to work in a state where these benefits are perceived not to be threatened. Given the great lengths Lilly takes to attract and retain top talent from around the world, we oppose any legislation that might impair our ability to offer competitive employee benefits or negatively impact our recruitment and retention.”
In addition, Murphy wrote, Lilly is concerned the amendment “sends an unwelcoming signal to current and future employees making Indiana appear intolerant.”

Bilerico notes that the legislation is still tabled in the House Committee, and although there are rumors about when it will reappear for further discussion and votes, it hasn’t yet been scheduled.

Tactics and Techniques of the National Woman’s Party Suffrage Campaign

Tactics and Techniques of the National Woman’s Party Suffrage Campaign
Summary

Founded in 1913 as the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage (CU), the National Woman’s Party (NWP) was instrumental in raising public awareness of the women’s suffrage campaign. Using a variety of tactics, the party successfully pressured President Woodrow Wilson, members of Congress, and state legislators to support passage of a 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing women nationwide the right to vote. In so doing, the NWP established a legacy defending the exercise of free speech, free assembly, and the right to dissent.

The NWP effectively commanded the attention of politicians and the public through its aggressive agitation, relentless lobbying, clever publicity stunts, and creative examples of civil disobedience and nonviolent confrontation. Its tactics were versatile and imaginative, drawing inspiration from a variety of sources-including the British suffrage campaign, the American labor movement, and the temperance, antislavery, and early women’s rights campaigns in the United States.

Traditional lobbying and petitioning were a mainstay of NWP members, but these activities were supplemented by other more public actions-including parades, pageants, street speaking, and demonstrations. The party eventually realized that it needed to escalate its pressure and adopt even more aggressive tactics. Most important among these was picketing the White House over many months, leading to the arrest and imprisonment of many suffragists.

The willingness of NWP pickets to be arrested, their campaign for recognition as political prisoners rather than as criminals, and their acts of civil disobedience in jail shocked the nation and brought attention and support to their cause. Through constant agitation, the NWP effectively compelled President Wilson to support a federal woman suffrage amendment. Similar pressure on national and state legislators led to the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.

The ERA is back! Awesome!

Alice Paul
Alice Paul
Holy crap, I was really surprised when I read this on Shakespeare’s Sister, and then read the WaPo article:

New Drive Afoot to Pass Equal Rights Amendment
Federal and state lawmakers have launched a new drive to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, reviving a feminist goal that faltered a quarter-century ago when the measure did not gain the approval of three-quarters of the state legislatures.

The amendment, which came three states short of enactment in 1982, has been introduced in five state legislatures since January. Yesterday, House and Senate Democrats reintroduced the measure under a new name — the Women’s Equality Amendment — and vowed to bring it to a vote in both chambers by the end of the session.

That just makes me so happy I could cry. Maybe we can finally honor Alice Paul the way we should.

2022-03-16 Update:
This didn’t go further in 2007, but several states made strides. The whole history is available on wikipedia and there is an advocacy organization working on getting this passed.

Twitter

Shorter review: Simple, and seemingly frivolous web communication tool. But I can see it really working as a fun, handy IM/mobile texting tool for my friends, if I can only herd all of them onto it.

What Twitter is: It’s a really simple, public blog. You post short (less than 140 characters) messages about what you’re doing right now. The messages display on the site, and get sent to your friends, via the web, IM and text messages – whichever they’ve set up. You can send messages to twitter from you mobile phone or IM.

Anil Dash put it much better back in February:

Twitter is a simple service that lets you send simple status update messages to your friends via SMS, IM, or a very basic web interface. Those messages are then sent to everyone who follows your updates, using any of the communications methods available. Simply put, it’s a buddy list or reply-to-all form of group communication for media which didn’t really have them. And Twitter lowers the threshold of participation to being just a straightforward prompted text area.

I discovered Twitter about 3 months ago, and even had a little twitter blurb on my site for a while. Since SXSW I’ve been on frequently and have a number of people I keep up with on the service. Twitter was a huge deal at SXSW – they had giant screens set up in the hallways and people would post little messages about what they were doing/thinking in the panels they attended, where they were going for lunch, etc.
That was pretty frivolous. It’s the mobile aspect that I really find intriguing. I want to be able to text my friends quickly and easily, all at once, to let them know what I’m up to. It would be great for spontaneous weekend activities – “we’re going to go to the zoo this afternoon – join us at 2:00!”

Friends I’d like to get set up on Twitter:
Stephanie (of course)
Dan
Douglas
Amy (although that could be dangerous; she’d twitter all day long)
JonwithTyres
MJ
My sister – how could I forget her on this list? I miss her a lot.
Cate

Anyway, here is me on Twitter.

Rumor: Katamari for Wii?

  • Post author:

The rumor is flying on all the gaming sites out there on the interweb tubes, but the article has been pulled from the original source:
Beautiful Katamari is set to be released in the USA on October 17th for $39.99 on the PS3 (with SIXAXIS support) and XBOX 360. The Wii version will arrive shortly after on November 14th on the Wii for $29.99.
God, I hope that’s true – that would tip me off of my current “which platform to get next?” dilemma over into getting a Wii.
