Nuvo has an article on the Brawny Man website, where the paper-towel icon stars in some short movies that are basically cheesy romance novels come to life. I saw one of them broadcast as a commercial during daytime TV the other day, so they’ll probably be making their way to prime time eventually. As NUVO suggests, they make great group viewing where you can make fun with others.
Merriam-Webster gives us a list of their favorite top-ten words that are not in the dictionary. I’ve heard ginormous before, and my sister has used slickery on occasion.
I have my own lexicon of made up words and phrases, although because of cognitive displaysia, there are some things I’ve forgotten to add.
My friend Lori’s site pointed me in the direction of this: Hanzi Smatter is a site that looks at Chinese or Japanese language characters that Americans have adopted as logos or tattoos and analyzes what they really mean. Which is often not at all what the American intended it to mean.
Sort of their revenge for all the “Engrish” sites that make fun of non-English speakers use of English words.
Tom Tomorrow has an interesting discussion on the politics of the new Star Wars movie, and how George Lucas himself says that he intends the movies to be commentary on how the Republicans are destroying democracy and the American people.
So where does Lucas stand in this political polemic? “I’m more on the liberal side of things,” he says. “I grew up in San Francisco in the ’60s, and my positions are sort of shaped by that … If you look back 30 years ago, there were certain issues with the Kennedys, with Richard Nixon, that focused my interest.” Lucas’ own geopolitics can sound pretty bleak: “All democracies turn into dictatorships—but not by coup. The people give their democracy to a dictator, whether it’s Julius Caesar or Napoleon or Adolf Hitler. Ultimately, the general population goes along with the idea … What kinds of things push people and institutions into this direction?”
My friend Doug loaned me the DVDs for several TV shows to watch while I’m home recuperating from heart surgery. So my girlfriend and I watched the first season of “Mad About You” over the last couple weeks. I always liked the sitcom about a happy New York couple, Paul and Jamie Buchmann (played by Paul Rieser and Helen Hunt), and it was very fun to watch now that I have a partner, because when it originally aired I was single. It’s fun to snuggle on the couch and watch a TV show about being a couple with my other half.
Stephanie bought a Roomba vacuum cleaner this weekend at Target, for half price. It was originally $150, marked down to $75. She needed a vacuum cleaner, and I was looking for a dust buster in the same aisle, so she picked it up. We were busy yesterday, so she didn’t have a chance to set it up and test it out, but it should be fun.

INDIANAPOLIS — Rock Indiana Campaign for Equality announced today their statewide $2 bill campaign. The campaign, which began two weeks ago with a saturation period, will last through the summer.
“Because of the vast discrimination that is being wielded against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Hoosiers, we feel it is important to send a message to businesses that GLBT citizens are not only consumers, but tax paying consumers at that and we contribute to Indiana’s economy,” said Pepper Partin, a Rock Indiana organizer. “We can easily take these powerful dollars to another state where special interest groups such as Eric Miller’s Advance America do not have a stronghold on the state, city and county governments.”
Every Hoosier who believes in equal rights for all is encouraged to participate. The bills should be obtained from banks and/or credit unions and should be spent wherever citizens spend their common denomination currency. According to an AP story, A priest in St. Paul, Minnesota denied communion to more than 100 parisioners on Sunday because they wore rainbow color sashes in support of gay and lesbian Catholics.
A Roman Catholic priest denied communion to more than 100 people Sunday, saying they could not receive the sacrament because they wore rainbow-colored sashes to church to show support for gay Catholics.
Before offering communion, the Rev. Michael Sklucazek told the congregation at the Cathedral of St. Paul (search) that anyone wearing a sash could come forward for a blessing but would not receive wine and bread.
A group called the Rainbow Sash Alliance has encouraged supporters to wear the multicolored fabric bands since 2001 on each Pentecost Sunday, the day Catholics believe the Holy Spirit came to give power to Christians soon after Jesus ascended to heaven. But Sunday’s service was the first time they had been denied communion at the altar.
Archbishop Harry Flynn told the group earlier this month that they would not receive communion because the sashes had become a protest against church teaching.
