Word Counts of Famous Short Stories (organized)

Shamelessly cribbed from Classic Short Stories and re-organized by word count from shortest to longest for comparison purposes. We’re discussing short stories with the Indy NaNoWriMo group this afternoon, and I thought it might help to have a word count chart similar to the one I did for Famous Novels back in November.

Of the 161 stories listed, 3081 is the median word count (number in the middle) and 4052 is the average word count. Duotrope (a free writers’ resource listing over 3950 current fiction and poetry publications) caps their search for short story publishers at 7,500 words, which means most publishers are looking for stories of less than that length.

Mean and average are the same thing. Median is the central figure in a list of figures.

Yes – I believe I did mean median instead of mean. Thanks for the correction!

No problem. I don’t mean to nitpick, just wanted to point that out. Otherwise, this list was appreciated, I was searching for something to make a comparison, and I found the list to be useful!

Thank you so much for doing this!

I’ve recently read a bunch of the Poe stories listed, and I was surprised at some of their relative lengths. For example, I can’t believe that “The Masque of the Red Death” is actually longer than “The Tell-Tale Heart.” It feels so much shorter! It will be interesting to go back and try to figure out why.

Also, I write mostly flash fiction, so it’s heartening to see that some of the stories are under 1000 words, and that many are quite short.

    Thanks again!
