I don't guess I need to say that I am all for giving women around the world every tool, every resource, every dollar and dinar, every bit of choice and opportunity and access, everything possible to lift themselves up and achieve everything they could want or imagine. But how can we talk about lifting women up without a serious discussion of, no less without more than the merest passing reference to, who and what has been keeping them down?

Small quibble with this very good article – the subtitle of "Saving the World's Women" should actually be "Saving the World." Because without the women, you're pretty much screwed. Awesome quote "I happen to believe that the transformation of women’s roles is the last great impediment to universal progress — that we have made progress on many other aspects of human nature that used to be discriminatory bars to people’s full participation. But in too many places and too many ways, the oppression of women stands as a stark reminder of how difficult it is to realize people’s full human potential."

I own one of these, but there are a couple other titles I think are interesting that might make it onto my reading list.

"Obama can certainly go to the country and swear he gave this bipartisan thing every chance but these folks are, um, more interested in defeating him “than solving the health-insurance problems that Americans face every day.” — I sure hope he's right on that.

This is how far we haven't progressed. No matter how hard we work of what we do, we can be dismissed by a joke.
