On Saturday, Stephanie and I drove to Cincinnati early in the morning for a figure skating competition that Stephanie was competing in. She won a fourth, third and first place medal in her three competitions. I got to meet several members of her former synchro skating team and other friends of hers, which was really cool. She knows some really nice people. On Saturday afternoon, we spend time recovering from the trip (she was worn out, and I’ve been fighting a cold).
On Sunday, we did some work around her house, including cleaning out her garage, hanging all her gardening tools in the garage, weeding, and replacing outdoor lights. We also checked and worked on all her storm windows. We’re pretty close to being done with seasonal work at both our houses. At hers, we need to rake and mow, and put her planting pots away. At my house I have to put away the hose, rake & mow, put stuff in the basement, and do some more insulation work.

Weekend Update 2004-09-27

Stephanie and I did a ton of work at my house this weekend to get the place ready for the party I’m throwing this coming Saturday. Mainly we did a lot of cleaning and organizing.
The party will be a retro 80’s party… and in gathering up stuff to wear, we’ve seen tons of appropriate stuff in the stores. Target has leg warmers and fishnet stockings. Pac-Sun and Hot Topic have checkered vans, t-shirts and the big oversized belts from the 80’s. Hot Topic has buttons of 80’s bands. Izods and Polo shirts are back at Lazarus.
This is a great site for ideas about the 80’s… InThe80s.com. I pulled a lot of ideas about decor from here, and there’s lots of helpful stuff about clothes, too.
We finally got to see the finale of The Amazing Race this weekend — that made me very happy, because I had been cheering for Chip and Kim for quite awhile, mainly because they treated each other very well and worked together throughout the whole race, and they did, for the most part, play fair with everyone all the way along.

Labor Day Weekend Update

So on Friday it rained, so a couple of us from work spent our last summer hours Friday at Union Jacks, drinking. Otherwise I would have mowed the lawn.
Later Stephanie and I went to Target and ate out at Colorado Steakhouse because we had zoo book coupons. I had a really great prime rib there, and the Caesar salad was awesome, too. I like my Caesars to have a lot of the anchovy flavor and lots of cheese, and this had both. The steak was a great cut of meat; thick and juicy even though I had it done medium-well. They had a mild horseradish sauce for dipping that really enhanced the flavor. The complimentary bread there is a very sweet biscuit, and it, too was addictive. Not quite like a Red Lobster cheese biscuit, but close. I’ve had uneven luck eating out at some chain steak house restaurants. At both Lone Star and Texas Roadhouse, I’ve had a really great steak on one visit, and on the next a very tough, stringy or unflavorful mess when ordering the same cut. We’ll see on my next visit to Colorado Steakhouse whether they can duplicate the amazing prime rib.
On Saturday, Stephanie and I ran a ton of errands all day that including dropping off several large pieces of furniture at the Salvation Army and paying bills. On Sunday, we washed my truck and her Honda, dropped off some recycling, and went to see The Notebook at the cinema grill for Stephanie’s friend Aleata’s birthday. It was a nice Hallmark-greeting type movie. Stephanie cried, and then I cried because she did. 🙂
On Monday, we drove up to Ikea in Schaumberg, Illinois. It was basically a day-long adventure, and we both ended up with lots of stuff. Apparently, it was “Everyone go to Ikea on Labor Day” day, because the enormous parking lot was completely full and the place was PACKED. Not just busy, but “crowded gay bar, spill a drink on yourself trying to squeeze through the crowd” type packed. Only not with gay people but also with heterosexual people with strollers and the small children that come with them.
If you know me very well, you know I have serious phobia of crowds. I’m not too concerned about small spaces, but I avoid lke the plague any situation where I’m required to sit/stand closer to people than regular personal space requires. Conseco Fieldhouse doesn’t seem to bother me much, but I can’t go to Deer Creek Music Center (I know I’m supposed to call it by the newer corporate name, but I don’t always remember it) the Hoosier Dome (ditto on the name) or that Indianapolis staple, The Indy 500. That’s the reason why I don’t see many concerts and don’t bother to see who’s coming to town for what show.
I was in full-on panic attack mode all day at Ikea. I couldn’t think; I couldn’t focus on the merchandise because I was so overwhelmed by the people. And the place was loud, too. Everything echoed, so babies crying and people discussing seemed to be at double volume. My heart was racing and I kept feeling dizzy like I was going to pass out. And yet, the prices on stuff were so good, and we had driven so far to get there, that I wasn’t about to leave.
Stephanie had a rug and a chair picked out that she really wanted. I wanted to look at something that would work for a china cabinet, and a TV/multimedia cabinet that would work well when I (someday) get a larger-screen TV. I also wanted to look at curtains. I ended up getting the curtains, but didn’t see anything that would work for the other two items. Stephanie got her chair and rug, and I got a couple of rugs and other assorted cool stuff as well. In all, it was a successful trip, but I think if we go again, it should be on a weekday when most people are at work. That would be pretty cool.

This weekend, I did a ton of work on my Dad’s website, and because of that we had to skip the Fever game on Friday. Saturday I worked on the site more.
Saturday night, Stephanie and I went to Dan and Doug’s 70’s party, which was really fun. We dressed as random hippies, because the theme was “come as your favorite 70’s TV icon.” Dan was a M.A.S.H. character, Doug was from Starsky and Hutch, Troy came as Kojak. Jon was the streaker from the 1976 Superbowl (he wasn’t nude; he had jogging shorts and a 1977 pro-streaking shirt), Kris was Ellie-May Clampett. There were lots of others, those are what I remember off the top of my head.
Sunday I went to Bloomington with Stephanie and watched the Bloomington Feminist Singers sing for the Unitarian Universalist Church service, which was really beautiful. They sing wonderfully. I was also overwhelmed by the service; having really only experienced Catholic and Episcopal services, this was very different for me and much more interesting than any service I’d been to before.
We also caught up on Big Brother and The Amazing Race on Sunday afternoon, and I spent some time reading In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, for my book club on Wednesday. I finished it up last night. Bad idea, as it gave me the willies, and I walked around double-checking that my doors were locked.

I didn’t get a change to blog about the July 4th weekend, because I was so busy last week working on the Brady Games website. It seems to be up and running well.
Most of the weekend we did stuff around Stephanie’s house; just summer cleaning and organizing. We did go to David and Garrett’s house and enjoyed the Low-Country Boil, and then went to Massachusetts Ave. to watch the fireworks. I have photos; I’ll try to get them up soon.
This weekend, we went to the monthly lesbian pitch-in at Mia and Ria’s house, which was especially fun because Julie brought her Republican friend to the pitch-in. I don’t think the woman knew what hit her when we started to talk politics. It’s nice to know how well-informed other women are about current issues.
Saturday, Stephanie had a skating exhibition to skate in, and I spent time working on my dad’s website. In the evening, we caught up on Big Brother and the Amazing Race, which we hadn’t seen during the week.
Sunday I spent the morning digging out fence posts and working outside, while Stephanie was at a chorus event. And then we went to a Fever game, which we lost. Sad.

Friday, Stephanie and I went to Girl’s Game Night and had fun. It was nice to see Lori, whom I haven’t seen in a while, and her friend Kat was fun.
Saturday was busy because Stephanie had a skating competition downtown, and she had a compulsory event in the morning (she won second place) and a freestyle event in the evening (she won first). I got to meet Stephanie’s coach Tara, who seems really cool, and I got to see her compete, which was exciting. In between the two events, we went to Stephanie’s friend Elizabeth’s house for a cookout, which was really excellent. I got to meet Joe and see Stephanie’s other friends again, and I also got to meet Elizabeth’s family.
Sunday we went to see Fahrenheit 9/11, which was excellent. I’d really like to see it again, although it sort of put me in a blue funk the rest of the afternoon.

I might have mentioned this before, but it bears repeating… I have a truly wonderful girlfriend. Stephanie is amazing and I am such a lucky person to know her and to have her in my life. 🙂
On Thursday, Stephanie and I went to an Indian’s game. Friday I went to her house and she let me organize all of her CDs. She has some kick-ass music. Anyone who has every They Might Be Giants album is truly cool.
Saturday, Stephanie had to drive to Cincinnati for her synchro skating stuff, so I spent the morning working on the yard. I changed the mower blade on my mower and cleaned the air filter, and then mowed the lawn — that made all the difference. I should have changed the blade a long time ago. I also put a border and mulch on one of the flower beds in the back yard so it looks cool. Then I read Entertainment Weekly and rested for the rest of the day, and in the evening Kathy and I went to the Fever game. Afterwards, we picked up some lattice for her deck from the Woodruff Place flea market.
Sunday, I drove the lattice over to Kathy’s and saw the amazing deck she built on the back of her house… all by herself. That’s really cool; more than I would ever attempt to do by myself. She also refinished and hung a door in her house that looked beautiful, too. Sunday afternoon, my friends met me at Imperial City for my birthday lunch and my favorite birthday cake, that Stephanie made for me. Then we went shopping and went to see Harry Potter. It was great… very well done. Then we went home for a bit.
Stephanie and I stopped by to see Dan and Doug for a little while; they had to put Geupel to sleep on Sunday because he had heart problems. He was a wonderful West Highland Terrier and was a joy for 15 years. He will be missed.
Stephanie made me Ziti for dinner, and gave me some kick-ass presents — she gave me Settlers of Catan, and some candles for my living room. And we spent the rest of the evening together. No, I didn’t see the Season Finale of The Sopranos, so don’t tell me how it ends!! I have it on DVR.

On Friday night I grocery shopped and spent the evening at home with Spike. Stephanie went north to visit her parents and friends Friday and Saturday, and I worked on my Dad’s site and did some stuff around the house. I got caught up on laundry, finally did all the dishes, and generally organized stuff. I went through lots of my mp3s and worked on metadata, and caught up on my TV watching. Thank god for DVR/TIVO, because I’d never see stuff otherwise.
Sunday Stephanie came home, driving through part of the storm on the way, and we went out to The Oceanaire for dinner. This was, of course, while tornados were moving through the area. We went anyway. Parking was kind of a pain, since it was Sunday night and the mall was closed. We parked in the mall parking, but ended up walking in the rain for a couple blocks.
Dinner was amazing. We had crab cakes as an appetizer, then had Maine Stuffed Flounder as an entree with green beans almondine (it rhymes!) and new potatoes as side dishes. I tacked the potatoes onto the end of our order, and I really didn’t need to, because the entree and other side dish was huge. We ended up taking home enough of the two sides for two more meals. I wish I were better at describing food for you, because all of the food was delicious. The crab cakes melt in your mouth, and the flounder, stuffed with crab, shrimp and brie, was wonderful.
I would highly recommend going to this restaurant. It was a pricy; an appetizer, entree, two sides and two glasses of wine came to around $75. But it was worth it for the exquisite food. Our server, Mark, was great too. He was funny and polite and keep up with what we needed without being annoying. Yeah, Mark! The atmosphere was great, too — the interior is art deco style, and there was classic jazz playing quietly in the background. We had a nice private booth that was intimate without being closed in. A very stylish, pleasant place.
After dinner we had strawberry shortcake at home and then spent the rest of the evening and Monday at my house.
It was a really wonderful weekend.

Yes, I know it’s Tuesday, and this entry was due yesterday.
Friday night I hosted the monthly lesbian pitch-in and had a nice turn out of 19 people. Mary Byrne and Tamara Tracy came to see my house, which was fun. There was some GREAT food. And I got to show off my girlfriend.
Saturday I had lunch with Stephanie’s friends at Bravo. All very nice people. I hope they like me. Then I went to my Mom’s and she and I and my niece went to the Zionsville Country Market. I bought a small birdbath for my front garden, and some cake candles that smell like sugar cookies.
Sunday I had a book club brunch at my house, which was small but very nice. We discussed In the Bleak Midwinter a murder mysterhy by Julia Spencer-Fleming. It was decent but not earth-shattering. Our next books are A Saving Solace by D.S. Bouden and Savage Beauty: The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay by Nancy Milford. I need to remember to tell Eugenia that we picked that last one. Later on Sunday Stephanie and I took Spike for a walk around the neighborhood, which was relaxing and fun and really enjoyable. It’s so nice to spend time with her, even when we’re just doing simple things.
