Jackson Katz, Phd, is an anti-sexist activist and expert on violence, media and masculinities. An author, filmmaker, educator and social theorist, Katz has worked in gender violence prevention work with diverse groups of men and boys in sports culture and the military, and has pioneered work in critical media literacy. Katz is the creator and co-founder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, which advocates the ‘bystander approach’ to sexual and domestic violence prevention. You’ve also seen him in the award winning documentary “MissRepresentation.”

“Marriage Contract” of Iowa Man

Via Smoking Gun: Check out what this guy Travis Frey from Iowa wrote up for his wife as a “marriage contract.” He’s under arrest currently for kidnapping his wife and holding her hostage in their home. I have to admit, I’ve never read anything like this. And I hope never to again.

FEBRUARY 17–This country, as you know, is filled with the deranged. And then there’s Travis Frey, a 33-year-old Iowa man who is facing charges that he tried to kidnap his own wife (not to mention a separate child pornography rap).

Frey, prosecutors contend, apparently is a rather demanding guy. In fact, he actually drew up a bizarre four-page marriage document–a ‘Contract of Wifely Expectations’–that sought to establish guidelines for his spouse in terms of hygiene, clothing, and sexual activities.

In return for fulfilling certain requirements, Frey (pictured left) offered ‘Good Behavior Days,’ or GBDs. Each GBD, Frey wrote, could be redeemed by his wife to ‘get out of doing the things’ he requested daily. A copy of the proposed contract, which Frey’s wife never signed and later provided to cops, can be found at left.

While we normally point out the highlights of most documents, there are so many in this demented, and very graphic, contract, we really can’t do it justice. So set aside ten minutes–and prepare to be repulsed.

Indiana Hate Crime: Man attempts to kill female partner of his ex-wife

From the Indy Star:

A Shelbyville man shot and wounded his estranged wife’s female companion early this morning at their home and then killed himself at his home, Franklin police said.

Arnita Petre, a 44-year-old special education caseworker from Franklin, was listed in critical condition at Methodist Hospital on this afternoon. James Enyart, 34, was pronounced dead at Major Hospital in Shelbyville.

Arnita later died of her injuries that was stated by the lawyers for sealing charges who are currently handling her case.  Actually, Arnita has a scholarship endowed in her name by loved ones at Franklin College.

The Obituary for James Dean Enyart appears in the Daily Standard:

James Dean Enyart, 34, 408 E. 4th St., Shelbyville, Ind., died at 10 a.m. Dec. 18, 2003, at his home. Death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was born June 22, 1969, in Portland, Ind., to Donald C. and Eva L. Martin Enyart Dreiling. His mother and stepfather, Jerry J. Dreiling, survive in Mendon.

Surviving are four brothers, Don R. (Anita), Ed W. (Beverly), Garry (Debi) and Robert (Letisha), all of Portland; and two sisters, Teresa L., of Delphos, and Amy L. Bash, of Celina.

He was publications editor for WFYI Public Broadcasting Station Television, Indianapolis, Ind., for five years. He was a 1987 graduate of Jay County High School and a graduate of Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.

Scary: he went to college at the same time I did.
