Throughout the month of August, and culminating on August 27th, Mars will pass closer to the Earth than it has in 5,000 years (or will again in the next 60,000), and will be the brightest object in the night sky. At that time, Mars should appear to be approximately 85 times brighter in the sky than it does ordinarily.
