Betty Berzon

I’ve always been a big fan of Betty Berzon and have several of her books. She writes a regular column for Planet Out, too, which I read whenever I can. Here she has a great column helping gay people deal with their relatives over the holidays. My favorite line:

The second thing is to understand that being gay is about a lot more than having sex. It is about a deep-seated orientation to loving another that is a natural expression of who you are as a human being. It is about an identity, a way of functioning as an individual that you share with millions of good people all over the world. The only way you will ever free yourself to be who you are is to separate your sense of yourself from the family’s sense of who you are supposed to be.

Fortunately, my family is very cool, and I love them very much.
