You have two totals for To Kill a Mockingbird.

    1. L R

Also, the individual totals for The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King do not total the number given for The Lord of the Rings — unless, of course, you’re counting the appendices at the end of The Return of the King as part of LotR but not TRotK..

The totals as currently given do sum correctly:
        Fellowship: 177,227
        Two Towers: 143,436
        RotK: 134,462
        Total: 455,125

For some reason, the initial table has The Hobbit (95,022) rather than Fellowship, but the full list has both.

This was so helpful! The novel that I’m writing is at 53,000 words and I was trying to figure out how many words is average for a book of my genre.

    Thanks for posting this!

Working on my own and just hit 122,000 words. I think the daily totals, what you put out in work for a single day are important, what the length of the story is, in total, in unimportant, as a number. It’s finished when it’s finished, as my pop would say.

I’m currently writing my first ever book and I was inquisitive as to the word counts of classic novels in relation to mine. I realize that the quality of the prose is the most important thing, but it was still informative to read this list. Thank you for publishing the information.
